Fishing on Skadar Lake — Rules, Species, Where to Go
Skadar Lake is a serious freshwater fishing destination. Permits, target species, seasons, and honest advice.
Skadar Lake has been fished commercially for centuries. It's still a serious freshwater fishery, and if you're a keen angler travelling through Montenegro, worth building a morning around.
Permits
Required. Get a daily permit at the national park office in Virpazar. 10–15 EUR. Bring your passport. Rules on gear and take limits are printed on the back — read them.
What you'll catch
Carp (up to 15 kg on Skadar), bleak (small silver fish, used for the local frying dish), catfish, chub, and endemic species. Fly fishing isn't a Skadar thing — bait and light spinning are what work.
Where
Reed edges around Virpazar for carp. Deeper southern basin for catfish. Local guides — usually the same men running the traditional boat tours — will point you at productive spots and lend gear if needed.
When
Dawn is the answer, in any month. Late March to June is best overall.
Combining with a tour
A traditional wooden boat tour that departs at 6am and includes a fishing stop is very doable — arrange direct with a captain. Not everyone offers it. Try the wooden boat operator in Poseljani and ask.
