Montenegro Road Trip Itinerary — 7 Days, Including Skadar Lake
A realistic 7-day Montenegro road trip itinerary from a local, with Skadar Lake as day 5.
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first Montenegro trip. This is the version I'd do myself — coast, mountains, Skadar Lake, ending back at the airport without a rushed morning.
Day 1 — Arrive Tivat or Podgorica, drive to Kotor
Pick up rental, drive to Kotor (30 min from Tivat, 1h30 from Podgorica). Late afternoon walk in the old town, dinner on the square.
Day 2 — Kotor Bay
Morning boat trip in the bay, afternoon walk the city walls. Overnight Kotor.
Day 3 — Perast and Herceg Novi
Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks in the morning, lunch in Perast, afternoon in Herceg Novi. Back to Kotor for dinner.
Day 4 — Budva and coastal drive
Drive down the coast: Budva, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac. Beach afternoon. Overnight Petrovac or Bar.
Day 5 — Skadar Lake
Drive to Virpazar (from Bar, 40 min), private boat tour, lunch on the square, afternoon at Rijeka Crnojevića for the viewpoint. Overnight Virpazar or drive to Podgorica.
Day 6 — Cetinje and Lovćen
Historic royal capital of Cetinje in the morning, drive up to Lovćen mountain and the Njegoš mausoleum. Overnight Cetinje or back to Kotor.
Day 7 — Slow morning, fly out
Whichever coast is closest to your departure airport.
What to skip if you only have 5 days
Cut day 3 (Perast can be a Kotor half-day) and day 6 (Cetinje can be a Kotor–Skadar stop). Keeps everything else.
