Photographing Skadar Lake — Best Spots, Times, Gear
Where the good light is on Skadar Lake, what lens to bring, and the shots most people miss.
Skadar Lake gives photographers three things not many landscapes offer at once: dramatic mountain backdrops, a huge water surface, and unusually good soft light in the shoulder seasons.
The shots to prioritise
Pavlova Strana viewpoint
The horseshoe bend at Rijeka Crnojevića. Iconic. Best in late afternoon in September and October. Wide lens (24mm or wider), or use a phone panorama.
Sunset from a private boat
Western sky, mountains dropping to the water, warm reflection. Take from open water south-west of Virpazar. Book a private tour so the captain will hold position — group tours don't wait.
Water lilies (late May–mid June)
Get low. Ideally shoot from a kayak or a wooden boat with a captain willing to drift into the patch. Golden hour or overcast light both work.
The old bridge at Virpazar
Shoot from the north side just before sunset with the mountains behind. Simple but atmospheric.
Gear
- Wide zoom (16–35mm equivalent)
- Medium telephoto (70–200mm) for birds and monastery details
- Polariser — cuts glare on the water
- Small dry bag for boat trips
What most photographers miss
The mist on the reed channels at sunrise. Get on the water by 6:30am in September for this — few operators will run that early but it's worth asking.
