Rijeka Crnojevića — The Quiet Alternative to Virpazar
A guide to Rijeka Crnojevića, the horseshoe-bend village on Skadar Lake — how to reach it, what to do, and why it's my preferred base in high season.
If you've seen that iconic photo of a river carving a perfect horseshoe through green mountains — that's Rijeka Crnojevića. And most people who visit go straight to the viewpoint, take the picture, and leave without stopping in the village below. That's a small mistake.
The viewpoint
Signposted from the main Virpazar–Cetinje road as "Pavlova Strana". Free to park, 30-second walk from the car. Best light in late afternoon, September and October especially. Bring a wide lens.
The village
Down in the valley, Rijeka Crnojevića is a tiny riverside settlement with an old stone bridge, three or four restaurants, and a couple of boat operators. Much less busy than Virpazar even in July. If parking in Virpazar is stressing you out, this is your escape valve.
Boat tours from here
Different lake experience — you head south down the river toward the open lake, through some of the most photogenic sections. Fewer operators than Virpazar, so book ahead. Routes tend to be shorter and more scenic.
Eat
Restaurant Stari Most on the bridge does honest grilled fish and homemade bread. Booking recommended in summer.
When to base yourself here instead of Virpazar
Peak season, if crowds bother you. Or if you're doing a two-day Skadar trip and want a different starting point on day 2. Guesthouse options are limited but the ones that exist are quiet and family-run.
