Podgorica to Skadar Lake — The Easiest Day Trip in Montenegro
A first-person guide to doing Skadar Lake as a day trip from Podgorica by car or train.
If you're spending a day or two in Podgorica and wondering whether Skadar Lake is worth the effort — yes, and it barely takes any effort. It's the single easiest good day trip in Montenegro.
By car
Leave Podgorica by 8:30am, drive south on the E80 for 40 minutes, exit for Virpazar. Park (reserve ahead in summer — see parking guide), boat tour at 9:30, lunch on the square at 13:00, back in Podgorica by 15:30 with the afternoon free.
By train (my recommendation)
Podgorica station has four or five trains a day to Virpazar, 30 minutes each way, about 2 EUR. The 7:45am works perfectly — arrive Virpazar 8:20, walk 5 minutes to the dock, 9am boat tour, catch the 14:00 back. Whole day out for around 45 EUR including the boat.
What to do
Boat tour, always. If it's your first visit, my ranking is in best boat tour on Skadar Lake. Add a walk up to Besac fortress before or after for the view.
Eat before the train home
Grilled fish and Vranac on the main square in Virpazar, one of the three family restaurants. 20 EUR per person. Then a slow walk back to the station.
Should you overnight instead?
If you have flexible plans, yes. Virpazar in the evening after day-trippers leave is a different, much quieter place. A guesthouse for one night runs 45–65 EUR, and the sunset from the bridge is the reason to stay.
