Skadar Lake Weather — What to Actually Expect, Month by Month

Skadar Lake sits in a warm mediterranean pocket surrounded by mountains, which gives it long dry summers, mild shoulder seasons and very wet winters. Here's what to actually expect if you're planning a visit.

Spring (April–May)

My favourite months for landscape. Water is high after winter rains, the reeds are new, the water lilies bloom in late May. 18–24°C in the day, cool evenings. Bring a light layer.

Summer (June–August)

Dry, hot, sunny. June is perfect — warm but not brutal. July and August regularly hit 35°C. Boats early or late; midday belongs to shade and long lunches.

Autumn (September–October)

The best value season. Warm water, empty boats, gold light. See my separate write-up on September and October on Skadar — it's the season I'd book if I had a choice.

Winter (November–March)

Wet. Genuinely wet. The lake floods and doubles in size. Most operators close. Interesting for birdwatchers (see my birding guide) but not for casual visitors.

Wind and boat tours

The main wind is a southerly that picks up around 1pm in shoulder seasons. Good operators run tours before it starts. If a captain suggests moving your tour earlier, trust them.
