Skadar Lake Wine — The Crmnica Region Nobody Talks About
The Crmnica valley south of Virpazar is Montenegro's best wine region and almost nobody outside the country knows it. Here's how to visit properly.
Right behind Virpazar, in the valley called Crmnica, is a wine region that quietly produces some of the best reds in the Balkans. Every family here makes wine. Most of it never leaves the country. This is genuinely one of the reasons I keep telling guests to give the lake more than one day.
Vranac — the grape to know
Deep purple, dry, structured, ages well. The good Crmnica Vranac tastes of dark cherry, tobacco and warm stone. At a family cellar you'll pay 5–8 EUR a bottle for something that would be 25 EUR at retail in Western Europe.
Three cellars worth your afternoon
I won't name them here because things change — the café owners on the Virpazar square keep an updated shortlist and will call ahead for you. Look for the words domaća vinarija (family winery) rather than the industrial producers.
How a tasting actually goes
You arrive, sit in a stone cellar or a shaded courtyard, and someone brings out three to five wines with plates of local prosciutto, cheese and olives. Nobody rushes. Expect to stay 90 minutes. Payment is usually cash, 10–20 EUR per person, sometimes free if you buy a bottle.
Combining with a boat tour
Boat tour in the morning, long lunch in Virpazar, one cellar in the late afternoon. Don't try two cellars in one day — you won't remember either.
