How to Get to Virpazar for a Lake Skadar Boat Tour (from Podgorica, Budva, Kotor)

Virpazar is one of the easier day-trip destinations in Montenegro to reach — but the last kilometre trips a lot of people up in July and August. This is how I'd actually get there from wherever you're staying.

The short version

• From Podgorica: 40 minutes, E80 highway, no drama.
• From Budva: 50 minutes via the Sozina tunnel (4 EUR toll).
• From Kotor: 60–70 minutes — either via Cetinje (scenic, twisty) or via Budva and the tunnel (faster).
• From Bar or the coast south of Sutomore: 30–40 minutes.
• By train from Podgorica or Bar: 30–40 minutes, 2–3 EUR, drops you 500m from the dock.

From Podgorica (the easiest)

Take the E80 south towards Bar. After about 30 km you'll see the exit for Virpazar/Skadarsko Jezero — take it, and you're at the village in five minutes. There are no mountain passes, no gravel, no surprises. If you're flying into Podgorica airport (TGD), rent the car there and you're at the dock in under an hour.

Cost by taxi: 40–50 EUR one way. Bolt works in Podgorica and is cheaper.

From Budva

Head north on the E65/E80 towards Podgorica. After Petrovac you'll go through the Sozina tunnel (4.20 EUR toll, cash or card at the booth). Exit for Virpazar shortly after. 50 minutes door to door if traffic is light — add 15 minutes in July afternoons.

Don't take the old coastal road via Sutomore unless you specifically want to. It's slower and the road is tired.

From Kotor

Two real options.

Option A — via Budva and the tunnel (60 minutes, easy): Down to Budva on the new road, then as above. This is what I'd recommend if you don't like mountain driving or you're tight on time.

Option B — via Cetinje (70–90 minutes, scenic): The old serpentine road up from Kotor to Cetinje is one of the great drives in the Balkans — 25 hairpins, huge views. From Cetinje it's a straight run down to Virpazar. Choose this on the way back, not the way there — you'll want the time.

From Tivat airport

Tivat (TIV) is 75 minutes from Virpazar via Budva and the tunnel. If you're flying in and doing a Skadar boat tour the same day, book a morning tour and add an hour of buffer.

From Bar or Ulcinj

Bar is 30 minutes. Ulcinj is 60. Both use the E80 north. Easy.

By public transport (better than most travellers think)

The Belgrade–Bar railway stops at Virpazar station. It's one of the most beautiful train lines in Europe and it drops you 500m from the boat dock. From Podgorica it's about 30 minutes and 2–3 EUR. From Bar, 35–40 minutes. Timetables are limited (roughly 4 trains a day each direction) but they exist and they run — check zpcg.me.

Buses to Virpazar are less reliable. If you don't have a car, the train is the smart choice.

Parking — the one thing that goes wrong

Virpazar has maybe 40 street parking spots and about 2,000 visitors on a peak July day. The math doesn't work. Every summer someone tells me they circled the village for 30 minutes and missed their tour.

Three real options:

1. Book with an operator that offers private parking (some, including mine, throw it in free). Easiest by far.
2. Arrive by 8:30am for a morning tour — spots are still there.
3. Park at Virpazar train station (free-ish, 500m walk) as a backup.

The meeting point at the dock

The main dock is 100m from the village square, on the north side of the bridge. Almost every operator meets there. Your booking confirmation will have exact GPS. The village is small enough that if you're standing on the bridge, you can see the dock — you can't really miss it.

Arrive 15 minutes early. Toilets are in the square (small charge). There's a good bakery next door for a quick burek before you board.

Combining Virpazar with the rest of your day

Virpazar sits perfectly between the coast and Podgorica, which makes it a natural half-day. Common combinations:

• Kotor morning → Virpazar afternoon boat tour → back to Kotor: works well with a sunset cruise.
• Podgorica morning → Virpazar boat tour → coast in the evening: the classic "moving south" day.
• Budva → Virpazar morning tour → wine tasting in Crmnica → back to Budva: one of my favourite full days. See my Crmnica wine guide.

What to do when you arrive

Park (or step off the train), walk to the dock, meet your captain, board. If you have 20 minutes before departure, grab a coffee at Pelikan or Badanj on the square — both are institutions. After your tour, eat lunch at one of the same restaurants: fresh Skadar carp, smoked bleak, homemade bread. My Virpazar travel guide has the full restaurant and logistics rundown.

The one honest tip

Sort parking before you leave home, not when you arrive. Everything else about getting to Virpazar is easy. Parking is the only thing that can ruin the day — and it's completely solvable if you plan ten minutes ahead.
